The security of motor vehicles and the keys that start them has increased dramatically over the past few decades. High security keys, transponder chips, push to start, etc. All of these features make our vehicles more secure but not without somewhat of a catch. If you have ever lost your only car key, you know exactly what I am talking about!
The price to replace a lost car key is not the only downside to modern security innovations. Increased hassle and difficulty in replacing these keys is always an ongoing issue. However, a good automotive locksmith keeps up with the times as well.
Many folks are unaware that local locksmiths might have the ability and experience to replace their lost or broken car keys, so we are going to break down the pros and cons of choosing a locksmith versus a dealership.

When should I go to the dealership?
If you are simply looking to get another key made without having lost your original, then the dealership might be the best option for you. You can drive there, and get a copy made from your original key.
What kind of vehicle do you have? For older models that lack many of the modern high security features, a dealership might be able to make you a key by simply providing your VIN (vehicle identification number) without even having to have your car on site. This is not always an option, but it is definitely worth the try. A quick phone call to your local dealership can let you know if they can make you a new key that requires no programming. Please not that if your key has a chip in it, this will not be an option.
